My daughter Sara bought me this basic culinary course as a birthday present. I don't cook anything and needed expert, friendly and supportive guidance. For people like me, I cannot recommend this course highly enough.

More than just beans on toast:

Everyone has to start somewhere. But learning to cook from scratch can be a daunting prospect when you’ve spent your life rarely or never having cooked anything more elaborate than beans on toast.

This is where we come in – our Back to Basics cookery class takes you gently and patiently through each step in preparing and cooking some simple staple dishes.

You’ll leave us with the confidence and skills to begin preparing and cooking more dishes at home.

Gentle guidance from an experienced chef:

We’ll start with kitchen familiarisation and the use of its various appliances and utensils. Guided and encouraged by our experienced chef tutors, you’ll learn how to prepare vegetables, meat and/or fish ready for cooking.

You’ll learn why some ingredients are best grilled, while others are better fried, steamed or roasted.

The day will be punctuated with tea and coffee breaks and you’ll actually cook your own lunch. Your chef will take you through the various stages needed to bring a simple dish to the table.

By the end of the day, you’ll feel completely confident in your new-found skill set. And you’ll leave with an Exeter Cookery School recipe pack and a goodie bag of the dishes you cooked.

What’s more, if you get stuck when attempting a dish at home, just give us a bell and we’ll talk you through it!

Techniques learnt:

  • Chopping - the best way to chop vegetables and herbs
  • Basic butchery - trimming fat, removing bones
  • Basic cooking - boiling, frying, grilling, steaming and roasting
  • Weighing and measuring
  • Timing - when to start cooking the different elements of a meal
  • Seasoning - how to use salt and pepper, herbs and spices
  • Temperature - how to set the correct temperature of the oven and how hot should a pan be

  • Spaghetti Bolognese
  • Lamb or Pork Chops
  • Potatoes - boiled, mashed, baked or chipped
  • Syrup Sponge Pudding
  • Essential sauces: tomato spaghetti sauce, gravy
